Protect yourself from ransomware!
May 29, 2017 62 Check

WannaCrypt, aka WannaCry, is a new ransomware that is spreading across thousands of Windows devices in almost a hundred countries. This cyberattack started on May 12, 2017, and is a malicious software that blocks access to the victim's data or threatens to publish or delete it until a ransom is paid. Victims of this attack include the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), Spain’s Telefonica, FedEx and more.

Although a “Kill Switch” has been released and has effectively slowed down the spread of the ransomware, there is currently no decryption tools or solutions available. The best course of action is to prevent the spread by protecting yourself preemptively, as anyone can become a victim.

Here are four ways to protect against ransomware:

1. Back up your data

It’s important to back up your data on a daily basis, so even if your computer servers get locked, you won't be forced to pay to see your data again

2. Ensure your systems are up-to-date

Ensure you are using supported versions of your operating systems and software; apply patches according to security best practices.

3. Keep your Antivirus software up-to-date

Antivirus programs can stop ransomware from being downloaded onto computers, and can find it when it is

4. Say No – to suspicious emails and attachments

Hackers need to download malicious software onto a victim’s computer in order for ransomware to work; be suspicious when opening unsolicited emails or attachments.

While NavyZebra merchants need not worry about this particular security breach, it is important to keep informed about these attacks and maintain vigilance with regards to potential vulnerabilities. Always implement best practices when it comes to security, for the sake of your business and your customers.
